A Kosmic Roller Coaster Ride

Dear Friends:

Have you contemplated life?s biggest question lately?why did something come from nothing 13.7 billion years ago? If you are like me, you don?t spend a lot of time thinking about the Big Bang. But if you did, you?d be in the company of some of the greatest minds in history, many of whom spent their lives wrestling with this question. So are such contemplations relevant only for philosophers, cosmologists and theologians? Or is it possible that how each of us answers this question has direct implications for the kind of life and the kind of world that we choose to create?

In our next What Is Enlightenment? Salon on Sunday, May 18th we?ll delve into this fundamental question together. Using the Guru-Pandit dialogue between WIE?s Andrew Cohen and integral philosopher Ken Wilber as a launch pad, we?ll discuss the ultimate purpose of the universe and try to determine whether ?the evolutionary process is God?s merry-go-round, repeating in infinite cycles, or a deadly serious endeavor charting ever new ground?? Please join us on the 18th for a sophisticated, compelling and potentially enlightening exploration of this all-important question. It may put all your cosmological notions to the test!

    The psychologist James Fowler defined faith as that which gets you out of bed in the morning--which is also a good definition of philosophy. Man is a theory making animal and, as such, the only animal that "creates the environment that creates who we become." The only question is--will we sit on the sidelines passively allowing others to be the arbiters of our existence, or will we make the effort to understand how our world is forged in the fire of ideas and become our own makers of meaning?
